Mares Sánchez

Ballet, Pointe, Jazz

Originally from Venezuela, Mares began her dance training in Classical Ballet at the age of seven with the María Teresa Alford Ballet in Barquisimeto, Venezuela. Later, she received a two-year scholarship to join the Nina Novak Classical Ballet Dance Academy in Caracas, Venezuela. During her pre-professional and professional training years, Mares had the opportunity of participating in productions like Don Quixote, Coppélia, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and La Sylphide. 

Mares has also danced/coached at the collegiate level and choreographed for numerous studios, high schools and university dance organizations: Iowa State Dance and Drill Team Association, Heart of America Dance Championships, National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Competitive Dance, Starbound National Talent Competition, and the M.A. Dance Nation National Championships. She is also a sixth year Staff with the M.A. Dance Nation Company in Plano, Texas, where she travels across the country teaching Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Military, High Kick and Pom dance techniques. Mares has been a part of summer commuter and private camps taught in Texas, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Ohio, Georgia and Connecticut. 

Mares graduated from the Florida State University School of Dance with a Master’s of Arts degree in Dance with a concentration in Studio and Related Studies in 2019. During her time at FSU Mares participated in several dance MFA and MA concerts by fellow FSU alumna. As well as in sight Contact Improvisation Jam performances and her own Thesis performance at the Florida State Capitol in April of 2019. For two years Mares throughly studied the ballet and contemporary techniques under the mentorship of the acclaimed and talented educators: Anjali Austin, Caleb Mitchell, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Kehinde Ishangi, Ilana Goldman, and Tiffany Rhynard.

Most recently, Mares obtained her Certification in the revolutionary Progressive Ballet Technique. A technique with ideals that are backed by sound physiological and biomechanic methods of training in order for the dancer to achieve more effortless precision and technical accuracy.

Mares is an advocate for dancer agency and the idea of encouraging “smart dancers”. She will challenge her students and aid them in the process of  developing their own artistic voice in the classroom.
